sail vessel "Élan"

The Sailor’s Life.

Pete and I met some amazing friends through the United States Power Squadron. Among them, Sid and Mary, who stand out as mentors and friends. Sid instructed two of the four courses we took. (Seamanship and Piloting) At the conclusion of the Piloting Course, this couple reached out to us with an offer we could not refuse. We were invited to experience sailing aboard their vessel, a Bavaria 35-foot sail-cruiser.

Our excursion started from their lovely marina, Owl Harbor, Isleton, CA, just off the San Joaquin River. We traveled the river, passing the Barron Hilton Mansion, where hundreds of boaters congregate on the water to enjoy an annual fireworks show. I even got some time at the helm!

Pete has always wanted to visit Franks Tract State Recreation Area as this is a fisherman’s paradise. We passed right by Franks Tract.

We shared a terrific dinner anchored at “Bedroom Two” before a dazzling sunset.

We woke to a beautiful sunrise and enjoyed a hearty breakfast before returning to their marina. We hope to return the favor and host Sid and Mary somewhere on our journey of the Great Loop!
